Bali tourism has become immensely popular. With beautiful beaches, mountains, coral reefs and religious sites, Bali has so much to offer. Also, there are bustling and vibrant markets, the stunning landscapes and thrilling activities such as snorkelling, hiking and paragliding which attract tonnes of adventure lovers from all over the world. It is high in the list of the most romantic honeymoon destinations. But, before you plan your next getaway to Bali, here are a few tips to ensure that your trip does not suffer any hitches.
Bali is famous for its slothful traffic. And, you can’t avoid getting caught up in it. If you plan to reach your destination on time, or if you are to meet up with other travellers before you head off to the tourist sites, we recommend setting off well in advance so that even if you are snared in Bali’s infuriating traffic, you will make it to your destination with time to spare.
This cautionary advice applies whenever you are travelling to a developing country. Bali is no exception. Never drink tap water during your stay here. The water source could be contaminated and you could fall seriously ill. You may even contract typhoid.

If you are travelling in a large group, rent a car as this is the most economical option. But, if it is a tiny group, you can opt for ‘moto-taxis’. But, moto-taxi drivers are reckless is a recurring complaint and a spate of small-scale and major accidents back up that claim. So, if you are travelling by a moto-taxi, be very firm about expressing your opinion if you feel the driver is being rash or irresponsible.
Bali’s culture, practises, traditions or religion may be alien to you. Part of the lure of travelling to a foreign country is soaking in the exotic culture. When you are in Bali, be careful to always be appreciative of its uniqueness. If you do or say something insensitive, you may hurt the local people’s emotions.

If you are shopping at the colourful local markets, don’t shy away from bargaining. As soon as the traders figure out that you are a tourist, they will hike the prices but you don’t have to cave in. Additionally, don’t start wrangling over prices if you are in a boutique or a mall.
Everyone loves it when tourists sprinkle their conversation with a few indigenous words. So, when you communicate with a Balinese, use a few local terms for ‘hello’, ‘please’, ‘good morning’, ‘good day’. Remember, the Balinese language is very different from Indonesian even though they are very similar.
Bali is grappling with a burgeoning population of stray dogs. They are everywhere and they roam about in packs. While they may look cute and cuddly, do not make the dire mistake of petting them. Many of these dogs are feral and could attack you.
