13 Things To Know Before Going To Bali

Bali tourism has become immensely popular. With beautiful beaches, mountains, coral reefs and religious sites, Bali has so much to offer. Also, there are bustling and vibrant markets, the stunning landscapes and thrilling activities such as snorkelling, hiking and paragliding which attract tonnes of adventure lovers from all over the world. It is high in the list of the most romantic honeymoon destinations. But, before you plan your next getaway to Bali, here are a few tips to ensure that your trip does not suffer any hitches.

Traffic Snarls

Bali is famous for its slothful traffic. And, you can’t avoid getting caught up in it. If you plan to reach your destination on time, or if you are to meet up with other travellers before you head off to the tourist sites, we recommend setting off well in advance so that even if you are snared in Bali’s infuriating traffic, you will make it to your destination with time to spare.

Watch what you are drinking

This cautionary advice applies whenever you are travelling to a developing country. Bali is no exception. Never drink tap water during your stay here. The water source could be contaminated and you could fall seriously ill. You may even contract typhoid.

Your Commute Options

If you are travelling in a large group, rent a car as this is the most economical option. But, if it is a tiny group, you can opt for ‘moto-taxis’. But, moto-taxi drivers are reckless is a recurring complaint and a spate of small-scale and major accidents back up that claim. So, if you are travelling by a moto-taxi, be very firm about expressing your opinion if you feel the driver is being rash or irresponsible.

Be Respectful of the Culture

Bali’s culture, practises, traditions or religion may be alien to you. Part of the lure of travelling to a foreign country is soaking in the exotic culture. When you are in Bali, be careful to always be appreciative of its uniqueness. If you do or say something insensitive, you may hurt the local people’s emotions.

Haggle with Prices

If you are shopping at the colourful local markets, don’t shy away from bargaining. As soon as the traders figure out that you are a tourist, they will hike the prices but you don’t have to cave in. Additionally, don’t start wrangling over prices if you are in a boutique or a mall.

Learn a few local words

Everyone loves it when tourists sprinkle their conversation with a few indigenous words. So, when you communicate with a Balinese, use a few local terms for ‘hello’, ‘please’, ‘good morning’, ‘good day’. Remember, the Balinese language is very different from Indonesian even though they are very similar.

Don’t pet the dogs

Bali is grappling with a burgeoning population of stray dogs. They are everywhere and they roam about in packs. While they may look cute and cuddly, do not make the dire mistake of petting them. Many of these dogs are feral and could attack you.

Save up for a Massage

This is a luxury that you deserve and one of the best things to do in Bali. The island has perfected the art and science of herbal massage. And, it is very cheap! So, set aside a part of your travel budget to experience a rejuvenating massage.

The Drug Laws are unforgiving

This is just a reminder. In Bali, the laws prohibiting drug use are very strict and punishment is harsh.

Watch out for those Mosquitoes

You may be pleased to hear that Bali is mostly malaria-free. But, there is an overabundance of pesky mosquitoes. So, arm yourself with mosquito-repelling creams or lotions when you go out and slather it onto your exposed skin from time to time.

Tipping is not mandatory

You don’t have to tip your waiters after a meal at a restaurant. They will not hold it against you. But, you can, if you feel like it.

Take note of the Warning Placards or Flags

You might see them along a beach. They are there to caution you against rip tides, freak currents etc.

ATMs may be a hassle

Not all ATMs here work. Make sure you have enough cash at hand. Moreover, ATMs charge steep fees for every transaction.
