Kerala, the land of spices and eclectic culture

One of the oldest trade routes of India, Kerala is exposed to global culture and cuisines since generations and you can see the mark of different cultures in various parts of the state. Kerala connected India to the world as a hub of spices and it was at Calicut, Kerala that Vasco de Gama first landed in AD 1498 and opened the route for the colonial powers to come to India. The mixture of various cultures shows how open the hearts of the people of Kerala is and you will feel the warmth of openness even today.

Spicy foods served on banana leaves are the first images that come to mind on the mention of cuisines of Kerala and the pungent aroma of coconut mixed with various spices fill your imagination. In accordance with the availability of natural resources the type of food changes in various regions of Kerala. In the coastal areas seafood takes centre stage while in the plains cuisines are primarily based on vegetables. In northern part of Kerala it is meat that rules the roost. Nowadays you can get any food in any part of the state but eating the cuisine in its own habitat has its own joy. Go for fish curry in coastal towns other dishes in accordance with the place you are visiting. Some of the famous Kerala cuisines include Idiyappam, rasam and variety of chips.

Kerala is known for its rich culture and dance forms and they play vital role in spreading the culture of Kerala across the globe. Kathakali and Mohiniattam are the two dance forms that are known the world over and have brought Kerala culture to the fore. When you see a performance of Kathakali you would feel as if various expressions are telling their own stories. Theyyam is another art form of Kerala that breaks all the rigid cast divisions of India and people of all sections participate for the ceremony and bow to god. The elephants show and Pooram festival at Thrissur look so majestic that you must include it in your Kerala holiday package if you travel there in April.

The food you eat and the joyous celebration you see make Kerala tourism one of the essential parts of your travel itinerary and when you visit the state you would return with more sparkle in your eyes.
