Mount Abu: Rajasthan’s Summer Capital

A tour of Rajasthan is not complete until one visits its summer capital—Mount Aburanchal or simply mount Abu. It is among the most sought-after hill stations in India, apart from being the only hill station in the state of Rajasthan. The mountain becomes a popular place among the local populations during summers which come here to seek respite from the rising heat. The surrounding areas are equally famous for their colourful religious celebrations and tourism.

The lush greenery around this famous mountain was a once a favourite hunting ground among the royal families and kings. And the open spaces are the places where the entertainers entertained the royals. The name Summer Capital of Rajasthan is derived from the fact that the British stayed here during summers to escape the Indian summer heat.

In the modern era, in spite of the rapid pace of modernisation, the surroundings have not left their historical connections behind. Historically, the areas around Mount Abu are believed to have been inhabited by Gurjars. The local deity has a tremendous influence over the local population, and the religious influence is evident from their lifestyle. One should not miss the stories associated with the local myths and legends. Apart from their local deity, the surrounding region is thought to be the last home of Saint Vasistha, where he is believed to have recited his final recitals. He is said to have retired in Mount Abu. Apart from Hinduism, the site is also home to one of the most famous Jain places of workship—The Dilwara Temples.

These Jain temples are world heritage site and are situated about 3 kilometres from Mount Abu and the crown of Rajasthan tourism in this region. Contrary to what popular media shows about Rajasthan, the areas surrounding Mount Abu has an excellent road network. An excellent way to get a good transport deal is by asking the hotels to arrange for one. They are more likely to get you to all those places without any hassles. Made from sandstones, these temples date back to the 11th and 13th century. Don’t be fooled by their apparent ancient outer appearance; their interiors boast of intricately carved marbles. These temples will introduce you to Jain Tirthankaras in the most beautiful way you’d ever imagined.

One of the most beautiful sites surrounding Mount Abu is the artificial lake—Lake Nakki. Spend your day around the lake, take a walk around its shore, or arrange a picnic. Nothing is more relaxing than the site of a lake and lush greenery surrounding it. In addition, the mountain also has a wildlife sanctuary in its vicinity. Being part of one of the oldest mountain ranges in the region, this small but diverse wildlife sanctuary will surprise you with its diversity in plant and animal life.

Don’t forget to visit this place on your Rajasthan tour; so that when someone mentions that Rajasthan is but a desert, you have a story to tell and memories to share. Browse through our Rajasthan tour packages for a memorable experience.
