Matheran is well-connected by road and rail, offering multiple transportation options for travellers. The nearest railway station to Matheran is Neral Junction, approximately 21 kilometres away. From Neral, visitors can embark on a scenic Matheran toy train journey or opt for a shared taxi or private vehicle to reach Matheran’s foothills.
Alternatively, travellers can drive directly to Dasturi Naka, the entry point to Matheran, from where they can either hike or take a horse ride to reach the hill station. It’s important to note that vehicles are not allowed beyond Dasturi Naka to preserve Matheran’s eco-sensitive environment.
The Matheran toy train journey is a nostalgic and enchanting experience. Trains numbered 52105/52106 are designed to enhance the journey with six coaches. Among these, passengers can find three second-class coaches, one first-class coach, and two second-class coaches coupled with luggage vans, ensuring a varied and comfortable travel experience for all aboard.
Shuttle services between Aman Lodge and Matheran are more frequent, with around 10 to 12 departures. The ride takes about 18 minutes, but it’s important to check the timetable before planning your journey.
The Central Railway has announced the introduction of a new special AC Saloon coach to the Neral Matheran toy train. The coach has been added to enhance the comfort and convenience of the passengers. This new coach is specially designed to accommodate up to eight passengers and is available for booking on a round-trip basis from Neral to Matheran and back.
One can opt for both same-day and overnight stay options. The inclusion of the AC Saloon promises a unique and immersive experience. Passengers can relish the opportunity to closely observe the beauty of nature and indulge in the tranquil ambience of Matheran’s natural surroundings.
To book the AC saloon, interested individuals are required to pay 20% of the total fare for their selected plan in advance, along with a refundable security deposit, at least 7 days prior to the journey date. The remaining 80% of the fare must be paid 48 hours before the departure. Failure to make the payment within this time frame will result in forfeiture of the advance payment and security deposit, and the booking will be cancelled without a refund if cancelled within 48 hours.
To make a booking, you can visit the Chief Booking Supervisor at Neral or any nearby Central Railway station. Payment can be made through POS, UPI or cash. If you make the payment at another station, you must communicate the receipt number to the Neral office by the day of deposit. There are different rates when it comes to the Matheran toy train price. For adults, a single journey on the toy train from Neral to Matheran is priced at 300 rupees in first class and 75 rupees in second class. Children’s fares are 180 in first class and 45 in second class. The shuttle service fare is 45 rupees for adults and 30 for children.
