Experience Handicrafts and Traditional Shopping during Rann Utsav

From 1st November 2017 to 20th February 2018, the Kutch region in the state of Gujarat is going to light up in celebrations. This is the best time to admire the shimmering landscape under the light of the full moon.

At the Kutch’s Rann Utsav, you will get to see bright lights, music, dance performances, and a whole lot more! This is also the best time to bask in the Gujarati culture and shop for traditional handicrafts.

Here are some of the handicrafts available here:

  1. Embroidery

Kutch is renowned world over for its mirrored embroideries. It is said that the women of Kutch weave their dreams onto the cloth through this form of art. Each village has a different way of weaving embroidery and hence you may stock up a variety.

  1. Hand block printing

At the Rann Utsav 2017, you will find a wide variety of hand printed textiles. The most important prints that you will find here are Rogan prints, Batik prints, and Ajrakh prints.

  1. Wood carving

The locally available bahuv wood and teak wood are carved with precision by the Harijan people living in Ludia and Dumaro. These attractive carvings take the form of a number of utensils like bottles, glasses, pastel rollers, and small tables, among others.

  1. Mud wall painting

As part of your Rann Utsav packages, take a trip to the living museums of the Banni area, which are the numerous houses present there. The mud walls of these houses have designs of peacocks, fans, fingers, and more.

  1. Silver work

The designers of Kutch are known to not only design but also to engrave superior quality silver jewelry.

  1. Pen knives and nutcrackers

If there is anything that has traveled the length and breadth of the country as well as overseas, it is the Kutchi pen knives and nutcrackers. These have been made by the artists that originally made swords for the royal family. They are created from iron bars for excess durability and are made using a forging machine.

  1. Iron bells with copper coating

In earlier times, bells were used by cowherds to locate their flocks. Today, a number of these bells are being used as church bells abroad. These bells have a number of patterns and are very beautiful to look at.

  1. Seashell toys

Give your children a treat for the holidays with plants, animals, and birds made of seashells from Bhuj. Apart from these, you may also buy agarbati stands and statues of Gods and Goddesses made out of seashells.

Be sure that you book one of the best Rann of Kutch tour packages well in advance as they tend to get sold out very quickly. So, join in the festivities of Kutch, enjoy the taste of Gujarati hospitality, and do not forget to carry a traditional souvenir for your loved ones.
