Lonar Lake: A Mysterious Destination To Explore In Maharashtra

Lonar Lake is a 50,000-year-old lake in Maharashtra’s humble Buldhana district. This ancient wonder draws visitors from everywhere, not just because of its age but also because of the mystery surrounding it. Spread across 6 kilometres, this lake is a unique blend of science, beauty, and religion. Its waters are both saline and alkaline, making it rare in India and worldwide.

Lonar Lake owes its existence to a cosmic event – a meteorite impact that created the breathtaking crater. Although many such craters have eroded over time, Lonar Crater remains a geological wonder etched in the earth. Scientists have identified it as the world’s largest basaltic impact crater, evidence of the forces that shaped our planet.

In this blog, we will look into the mysteries of this lake, where science meets spirituality amidst stunning natural beauty.

History Of Lonar Lake

Lonar Lake, also known as the Lonar crater, is remarkable evidence of Earth’s ancient past. This saline and soda lake is a designated National Geo-heritage Monument. Its origin dates back to the Pleistocene Epoch, when an asteroid collided with the Earth, leaving behind a magnificent crater.

Measuring 1.2 kilometres in diameter and located approximately 137 meters below the crater rim, Lonar Sarovar is one of only four known hyper-velocity impact craters in basaltic rock worldwide. The meteor crater rim spans about 1.8 kilometres in diameter, showing the great force of the collision. Estimates suggest that Lonar Lake formed between 52,000 and 6,000 years ago, which makes it a captivating window into Earth’s geological history.
