Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh is a cold desert mountain valley, high in the Himalayas. It is covered in snow for half the year and therefore remains isolated and difficult to reach. However, during the summer months, Spiti Valley lures visitors with its high-altitude beauty and diverse places to go and things to see. In this valley the town of Kibber is a very popular destination for stargazing – thanks to its having all three good stargazing requirements – a high altitude, no light pollution and clear skies. By night there are several places from which to star gaze and catch great glimpses of the majestic Milky Way and learn one’s way around the fascinating night sky.
Visitors to this remote Himalayan wonderland can also do a homestay with Spiti families to learn more about their unique culture and shop for traditional Tibetan and Buddhist handicrafts like prayer flags, bowls, and statues at the Kaza market area. There are monasteries dating back hundreds of years, quaint villages, clear rivers, verdant green forests and magnificent glaciers and mountain views.
