India is a diverse land where individuals from different religious and cultural backgrounds live harmoniously. The state of Uttarakhand is an example of a place where tourists can witness such rich diversity in all its glory. Also known as Devbhumi, meaning the Land of the Gods, the state is home to one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage circuits in India, called the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage or the Uttarakhand Char Dham. It is considered the ultimate destination for individuals of the Hindu faith who are seeking god’s blessings.  It is said that everyone should go on the holy Chardham Yatra at least once in their life. Its spiritual importance is immense, with millions of tourists and devotees visiting the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage every year. The four holy abodes that comprise this circuit in Uttarakhand include Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. All these sites are located in the state’s Garhwal region amidst the Indian Himalayas. Among these four sites, Badrinath is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites, as it is also a part of the four holy abodes that make up the Bada Char Dham Yatra route, alongside Puri, Rameswaram and Dwarka.

Best time to visit Char Dham

A famous phrase suggests that there is never a wrong time to go on a pilgrimage and get god’s blessings. Though that is true to some extent, in the case of Char Dham in Uttarakhand, it is better to learn about and follow the suggested timings for a safe and fruitful experience. The summer season, which ranges from April to June, is considered the best time for Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand. During this period, May is considered the best month to visit Char Dham. As the region is located amidst the snow-covered Himalayas, the temperature stays quite low throughout the year. So, the onset of summer brings a sigh of relief to the region, with temperatures ranging between 20° to 35°C. The overall weather stays clear and pleasant throughout, making it the peak time for Char Dham Yatra. However, the temperature falls gradually after sunset, so make sure to pack warm clothes for the journey. Due to the peak visitor crowd, make sure to clear your Char Dham helicopter booking in advance. You can easily find Chardham tour package options for this season.

The second season for Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand is monsoon, which stretches from July to September. Even though the temperature remains quite pleasant, ranging between 10° to 20°C, it is advised to skip going on the Char Dham Yatra temple trip during this time. It is because, during monsoon, the region experiences heavy rainfall, especially in the area surrounding Char Dham. It gives rise to various issues, including slippery paths, flooding, landslides, etc., which are dangerous for tourism and pilgrimage alike. Thus it is not considered the best season for Char Dham yatra in Uttarakhand. So, it's better to look for Chardham tour package options for other seasons.

The third season for Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand is winter, which stretches from October to March. The temperature during this time remains very low, ranging between 2° to 14°C and usually dipping below sub-zero level. The shivering cold with heavy snowfall creates a harsh and unfavourable condition to carry on the holy journey of Char Dham Yatra. This is the reason why the gates to Char Dham in Uttarakhand remain closed and inaccessible during winter. No matter when you are visiting, find attractive deals on Chardham tour package options on our website.
