Australia lies in the Southern Hemisphere, which means that seasons are not what you are used to, if you are coming from the Northern Hemisphere. Australia has four seasons but the months they fall in, are not what you would expect. Also, the climate varies across the eight states and territories, so you never really know what to expect. Apart from the four typical seasons of summer, autumn, winter and spring, Australia’s tropical north also has a demarcated dry and wet season as well.
The Australian summer season falls between December and February. It is probably the best time to travel to Australia. While the rest of the world shivers as they welcome Christmas and New Year in winter, you could be surfing, lounging on the beach, swimming or simply hiking in Australia. Summers here are indeed glorious and are the ideal time to visit in Australia for walks along the coastal cliffs, visits to vineyards, beaches, golf courses and national parks. It is also the perfect season when you can enjoy sports such as cricket and tennis grand slams such as Australian Open. This is also the best time for music festivals and of course, the amazing New Year’s Eve celebrations.
The months of March to May are Australia’s autumn. The landscape wears a golden cloak as leaves turn yellow. This is a great time for white-water river rafting on the rivers in Tasmania. There are guided-walk experiences which take you through some spectacular sights along the Outback in the Northern Territory or the white sandy coastlines of Western Australia. For more sedate activities, autumn is the time for food and wine festivals. Another major highlight of this season is the Melbourne Grand Prix, the adrenaline-fuelled racing extravaganza.
This isn’t the upside down. It’s Australia, where snowy winters welcome you from June to August. Ski down the exciting Australian Alps or snowboard along Victoria’s slopes for the ultimate winter thrills. Celebrate Christmas in July at the Winter Wonderlights light show in Sovereign Hill, Victoria or do a bit of whale watching along the coastline. With such exciting and varied activities lined up during winter, this could be the best time to visit Australia for fun, excitement and celebrations.
Spring take over Australia during the months between September and November. This is the time when Wildflowers bloom throughout the countryside. There is much excitement in Melbourne leading up to the Melbourne Cup. This alone could make it the best time to visit Australia for many. This is a great time for trekking in Queensland. But if you want to enjoy the beauty of Australian Wildflowers in full bloom, head to South Australia’s Kangaroo Island. Canberra also celebrates Floriade, which is a month-long celebration of the spring season.
Australia’s tropical north experiences a wet season from December to March. It can get hot and humid as there are rainstorms almost daily. It is a great time to see the high cascading waterfalls in places like Kakadu National Park. It is a spectacular sight as the water careens down great heights and disappears into smoke at the bottom.
May to October is the dry season in Australia’s tropical north. The skies are clear, and the days are filled with sunshine. It could well be the best time to travel to Australia. This is also the season when you can catch one of the many Australian festivals.
Most of Australia closes down during certain public holidays. Some of the national public holidays celebrated in Australia are New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Australia Day, Easter Monday, Christmas and Boxing Day. This is the time when people want to spend time with their family and friends.
This is also the peak season and interstate flights bookings can be difficult to get. Booking in advance is a wise thing to do in such cases. Then there are further holidays within each territory as well.
One of Australia’s biggest attractions is the Great Barrier Reef. Located in North Australia, it is warm throughout the year. In summer, temperatures can be quite high, although the heat is interspersed with tropical rain. During summer and spring, the wet season is also quite predominant here. The wet could quite possibly reduce the number of tourists. So if you don’t like crowds, this could be the best time to visit Australia.
Beach lovers who are headed to Australia for some sun, sand and surf are best advised to follow the weather before choosing which beach they plan to spend their vacation. Summers are often the best season to visit in Australia but it’s also worth noting that not all beaches are recommended for a swim. You might encounter jellyfish, crocodiles and even sharks. To be safe, it is always advisable to swim in ocean pools, netted beaches or between lifeguard flags. More dangerous than any animals are the riptides which are more common here. They’ve been known to overwhelm even the strongest of swimmers. Always pay heed to the instructions from the lifeguards on duty.
