Family Travel Insurance

Whether the travel group is small or big, people of all age groups in the family are prone to risks such as accidents and medical emergencies during the trip. It is therefore recommended to get family travel insurance when the members of a family are travelling together. The plan is also known as family floater travel insurance.

Family travel insurance in India covers the entire family from the age of six months to 60 years. Seniors above 60 years of age are not covered under this plan. They need to take a separate cover.

Family floater travel insurance covers medical expenses, loss of passport, complete loss of checked-in baggage, trip delay for a maximum of five days, trip cancellation etc. Some of the plans also cover burglary in the house back in India while one is travelling.

Here is a list of some facts that one may have to keep in mind while planning the trip:

Policy duration

Family floater travel insurance plans cover trips as short as seven days to as long as 182 days.

Policy coverage

Family travel insurance plan expenses up to USD 250,000. The sum assured may vary from country to country. It is generally lower across Asian countries in comparison to the US or European countries. Unlike an individual policy, the sum assured is shared by all the family members. One should also check if he/she is travelling to exotic and unique locations.

Single trip policy

Notable, the cover taken is applicable for a single trip. The entire family cannot go on for multiple trips on the same policy. The policy can be renewed if there has not been any claim within the time frame. There is no medical checkup required for buying the family travel insurance.

Some drawbacks

In case a family member has some pre-existing diseases, the same is not included in the cover. Very few insurance companies offer a complete cover. General checkups such as eye test and skin related tests, pregnancy and prenatal care are not covered in family floater travel insurance.

While opting for a plan, one should always remember that premium of family floater travel insurance in India depends upon the destination country, the age of the eldest family member and duration of the trip. So, one should compare all available plans and seek help from a trusted travel partner at the time of buying family travel insurance plan.
