Places to visit in Paro

Paro has more than 150 temples and monasteries including the famous Tiger’s Nest Temple. Also known as Taktsang Lhakhang, the Tiger’s Nest Temple is among the most revered holy sites in the Kingdom of Bhutan. Situated at an altitude of 3,000 metres, the temple is crafted with amazing architecture. As per belief, Guru Rimpoche arrived here riding on the back of a tigress in the 7th century and meditated in the sacred cave. To reach the monastery, you need to hike a 2-km trail observing the enthralling valley. Tourists enjoying a Paro vacation must visit the National Museum of Bhutan. Set in a historical watchtower known as Paro Ta Dzong, the museum casts a light on the art and culture of Bhutan. Here, visitors get to see ancient armours, jewellery, artworks and handicrafts.

Visiting the Airport Viewpoint is one of the key things to do in Paro. Tourists experience a breathtaking panoramic view of the Paro Valley from the site. Further, Drukgyel Dzong, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is amongst the major Paro sightseeing places. It was built in 1649 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal as the symbol of victory of Bhutan over Tibet. The ruins of the fortress carry the legacy of valour of Bhutanese. The 15th century Dumtse Lhakhang is an epitome of peace. The three-storied temple signifies hell, earth and heaven through each of the floors. One of the most ancient monasteries to visit during Paro holidays is the 7th century Kyichu Lhakhang. The temple holds a sacrosanct ambience and signifies the precepts of Buddhism.

It is an architectural marvel that signifies the life of Lord Buddha. There are fourteen shrines and chapels that emanate spiritual vibes in the premises. Besides, the spectacular view of Paro Chhu River flowing through the valley can be experienced from the fortress.
