Akal Takht has a special significance in Sikh faith. Its name translates to “Throne of the Immortal” and it is the supreme among five seats of religious authority. It was founded by Guru Hargobind Sahib in 1606. The Akal Takht served as a symbol of justice and political sovereignty.
The original takht was a simple 9-feet-tall platform from which Guru Hargobind Ji resolved disputes and dispensed justice. It is now a resplendent 5-storeyed structure with the Golden Temple complex. This is one of the most humbling places to visit in Amritsar.
