Located on the Halstatter Lake with the backdrop of the beautiful Salzkammergut mountains, Halstatt is a popular place to visit in Austria. The quaint and charming town is full of 16th century Alpine houses, cafés and shops.
Among the places to visit here is the salt mine museum with an underground slide and a salt-lake boat ride while the Treppe ins Nichts offers glorious panoramic Alpine views from a high-altitude observation deck. Another place for views is the Skywalk Hallstatt, a 1148-feet tall viewing platform overlooking a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For those who don’t mind the cold, there’s the Eispalast Dachstein, an attraction that’s inside a glacier, with figures, pillars and themed rooms carved from ice. Don’t miss the Hallstätter Glacier while you’re here either. It’s the largest glacier in the Dachstein mountains.
Some of the other places to visit in Austria include Durnstein with its medieval castle and Alpbach, an isolated town in the Alps; the Krems which is popular for wine tasting and producing the apricot brandy Marillenschnaps, or the pretty town of Lienz. Other small towns that you should not miss are Felkirch and St. Gilgen.
