Formerly known as the “Malay Quarter”, the brightly-coloured Bo Kaap neighbourhood in Cape Town came into being in the 16th and 17th century. Predominantly a Muslim neighbourhood, the bright colours owe their vividness to the Eid celebrations in the quarters. Even today, the houses are jam-packed like colourful candy in a bag.
“Distrik Ses” or District Six was once a multi-cultural Bohemian neighbourhood made up of working-class people, from Jews to Christians and Muslims. Cleared out during the apartheid, the District Six Museum’s rotating exhibit chronicles the life in the quarter.
