Undoubtedly at the heart of all Jodhpur tourist places is the fort that defines the old city. Mehrangarh Fort, one of the largest in all of India, stands atop a hill overlooking the city and took many years to complete. That’s why it displays multiple styles of architecture. The ‘Fort of the Sun’ as its name means, is encompassed by walls and has seven gates. Once inside, take your time exploring its many chambers and courtyards. The most famous of them all are the Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal and Sheesh Mahal, all exquisitely adorned and beautiful. Much of the fort is now a museum holding priceless artefacts like miniature paintings, armoury and antiques. But most significantly, this is also the resting place for the remains of Emperor Akbar.
The entire fort complex is full of interesting sights and locations so you could easily spend a whole day exploring it.
Tip: Those interested, taking the Flying Fox tour and zip lining across the fort is a thrilling activity.
