Inaugurated in 1981 by Queen Noor Al Hussein and now a part of the Noor Hussein Cultural Foundation, this is Jordanians at their most creative and festive. Artists from all over the country gather here between the end of July and the beginning of August to participate in enclosed and open-air events that include music, folklore, orchestras, ballet, Shakespearian theatre and displays of handicrafts and art. The summer makes for pleasant evenings of catching up on art and shopping for Bedouin rugs, jewels, ceramic objects, embroidery and glass and metal work, as craftsmen and women demonstrate how they create these artistic objects. Locals flock to this festival in thousands just to witness one of the biggest events in Jordan. What makes this even more interesting are its seminars and workshops. Try and sync your travel to this festival and take a workshop – a refreshing experience even for the most jaded traveller. This event does not take place during peak tourist season, so hotels and tickets are cheaper and though it is crowded, it is a great time to be here for this stunning spectacle of Middle Eastern work and play.
