Kanyakumari celebrates a number of religious and cultural festivals and the atmosphere is imbued with enthusiasm and fun. While festivals such as Navratri are celebrated with a great deal of fanfare, the Cape Comorin Festival which is celebrated in October, adds a touch of grandeur to the festivities. Celebrated over three days, there are several cultural programmes which introduce visitors to the various aspects of Kanyakumari.
In the months of July and August, the Kanyakumari festival that grabs your attention is the Kalabham festival where the image of God is covered with sandal paste. Following the Tamil calendar, on the last Friday of the month, the image is covered with flowers that the devotees have brought lovingly. This ten-day festival celebrated between December and January every year brings thousands of devotees to Kanyakumari. Taking place in the Suchindram Thanumalayan Temple, this is one of the most important festivals of Kanyakumari.
Celebrated in December, this is a Christian festival that is quite Indianized in the manner in which the procession of St. Joseph and Mother Mary is taken through the town. This is also called the Feast of Our Lady of Ransom and is celebrated for ten days. During the festival days, there is morning festival mass with benediction and special prayers in the evening. The feast culminates with the golden car procession.
Celebrated in the first week of May, a number of different cultural programmes are a part of this vibrant festival.
