You can’t explore the true essence of Munnar without paying a visit to its tea plantations. With more than fifty tea estates, this hill station is the de-facto tea capital of South India. In a land where everyone craves a smoky coffee, Munnar is your retreat to the comfort of hot piping tea. Some of the major tea estates here are Harrison Malayalam, AVT Tea, Michael's Tea and Brooke Bond. Apart from these, Tata is the major owner of several tea estates here.
You will be surprised to know that Munnar didn’t have a single tea plant until someone discovered Munnar’s potential to become the king of tea. The first tea plantation was set up in Sevenmallay estate in Munnar, making it the oldest tea estate here. There’s also a tea museum managed by Tata tea house that displays and exhibits several methods of tea preparation and innumerable types of tea grown here.
The Kolukkumalai tea plantation outside Munnar is the highest organic tea plantation in the world. Located 8000 metres above the sea level, getting here takes some work. The rustic road goes only half way and disappears just as you are approaching the estate. We recommend taking a guide along with you while visiting this place. This tea plantation is definitely a place to visit in Munnar and to enjoy an aromatic stay.
