Jim Corbett National Park is the oldest natural reserve for India’s national animal, the Bengal tiger. Established in 1936, the Project Tiger was launched in 1973. Today, it is a thriving ecosystem for tigers, endangered Asiatic elephant and Ghariyal, also Asiatic black bear, hog, walking deer, sambar, sloth bear, etc.
The ecosystem is home to around 600 bird species such as great pied hornbill, white-backed vulture and orange-breasted green pigeons. The Jim Corbett tour is a dream safari, as you can spend the night in the wilderness. Jim Corbett tourism allows you to explore this well-preserved environment and understand the importance of these animals for the ecosystem.
Jim Corbett National Park is located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, situated between the Lesser Himalayas and the Siwalik Mountains. The park spans across 520 square kilometres and consists of hills, marshy lands, grasslands and a large lake. Three rivers run through the park—Ramganga, Kosi and Sonanadi, bringing life to the park.
The national park experiences three seasons—Summer, monsoon, and winter. The best time for a Jim Corbett tour is in winter, which ranges from December to March. The temperature is at cool at 5 °C, and you have a better chance of spotting tigers and other animals. In summer, April to June, the heat increases to 40 °C. Due to summer holidays, this is the busiest time. However, do note that the park is shut from June to November.
The national park is divided into five zones that are open to safaris: Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela, Dhikala, and Durga Devi. Each of these zones has its share of flora and fauna, but the Dhikala zone is the most popular. The park allows you to spend the night within the gates of the reserve.
