The Garo tribe celebrates the Wangala Festival which is a harvest festival that is celebrated in honour of Saljong, the Sun-god of fertility. Colourful costumes and brilliant headgear is a mainstay of this Shillong festival and there are beautiful dances and performances by locals.
This is one of the major events in Shillong. It is a thanksgiving dance which is held in April for three days. Men and women dress up in traditional finery and celebrate wholeheartedly.
One of the events in Shillong that is hugely anticipated is the Nongkrem Dance, held in October or November in a place near Shillong. Goat sacrifice and dances play a huge role in this festival.
