If travelling means collecting unique memories, taking pictures at every turn and experiencing culture in all its glory, then visiting Udaipur during one of its famed festivals or events, is the journey you’ve been looking for. Read on, to discover more about them and begin your next phase of planning.
Head a little north of Udaipur to the beautiful Kumbhalgarh Fort for this three-day festival celebrating the colourful heritage of Rajasthan. This Udaipur festival has different day and night time schedules, with activities like contests and craft work, and vibrant lights, colours and dance performances once the sun sets. If you’re looking for the authentic Indian cultural experience, this is it.
Marking the arrival of spring, the Mewar Festival is celebrated with much fanfare and fervour, making it one of the standout events in Udaipur. If you’re visiting the city in April, do try and catch the festivities and activities – including folk dances and music performances, heritage attire on display, religious ceremonies and a huge procession all the way up to Lake Pichola, to culminate it all.
One of the most important events in Udaipur, for tourism and the local community, is the Shilpgram Utsav that occurs in the village of Shipgram, just eight kilometres from the main city. This 10-day festival held in December, right in the peak tourist season, is a showcase of some of India’s most ancient and intricate handicrafts from Rajasthan and beyond. Witness the skills that go into hand-making exquisite products like wooden objects, jewellery or textiles – and pick up as many as you can as perfect vacation souvenirs and gifts to take back home!
There are other celebrations too, like Diwali or Teej Festival, but these three are surely the highlights of the year. If you’re interested, intimate SOTC and an Udaipur package will be recommended accordingly.
