Azerbaijan is a secular country despite having a majority Muslim population. Nevertheless, the country celebrates most festivals with a great deal of enthusiasm. While most are Azerbaijan festivals tend to be religious festivals, some also mark important dates and events in Azerbaijan’s independence struggle. Ramadan is known as Bayram here and the last day of the month is celebrated as Eid ul Fitr. Likewise, the other big religious festival here is Gurban Bayram or the Festival of Sacrifice which marks the day of the Haj pilgrimage.
There are also quirky Azerbaijan events such as the International Jam Festival in which takes place in Gabala or the Forgotten Recipes festival where the meals that the ancestors used to eat is prepared. The Baku Jazz Festival in October is also a huge draw while the Pomegranate Festival in Goychay celebrates this versatile fruit. The Parsi New Year is celebrated with a great deal of excitement and it is one of the Azerbaijan events that everyone looks forward to with a lot of enthusiasm.
Every year, 9th May is celebrated as Victory Day, to commemorate Soviet Republic’s victory over Germany during World War II.
May 28th is celebrated as Republic Day, the day when the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan was formed in 1918.
There are other delightful festivals such as the Apricot Festival in Goranboy or the Dolma Festival in Khachmaz or the Watermelon Festival in Sabirabad. Also, the Apple Festival and the Carpet Festival in Guba are some of the Azerbaijan events that people enjoy and celebrate because of their love for life.
