The city of Guwahati in Assam is the largest city in North East India. The city of Guwahati lies between the Brahmaputra river and the Shillong Plateau. It sits at an elevation of 55.5 metres and is surrounded by hills on all sides. To the West is Nilachal Hill, to the North is Chitrachal Hill and to the South there is Narakasur Hill. Brahmaputra, which is one of the longest rivers of the world, is said to be the main river of Guwahati. Interestingly, while most rivers in India are considered to be female, the Brahmaputra is considered a male river.

One of the most famous places here is the Kamakhya temple which is the seat of the Ambubachi Mela held every year in June. People from all over come here to pay their respects to the goddess Kamakhya. Another famous temple here that draws a lot of visitors is the Umananda Temple located on an island called Peacock Island on the Brahmaputra River. Although this is a place for Shiva devotees, there are idols of other Hindu gods as well.

For those who prefer cultural pursuits, the Assam State Museum is said to be one of the most famous museums in North East India. Since it is located right in the centre of the city, the location is convenient for tourists. Established in 1940, the museum was at first used to showcase the region’s handicrafts, sculptures and traditions. There are some sculptures and artefacts here which go back to the 5th century! The museum is a great place to learn about the culture and history of Assam.
There are various amusement parks here as well, such as Nehru Park, which is a landscaped park displaying numerous sculptures. Accoland is a water park suited for all ages, while the Dreamland Amusement Park thrills visitors with its snow park.
Lastly, the Guwahati War Memorial located in Latasil’s Dighalipukhuri Park is a great place to learn about the brave soldiers who laid down their lives fighting for the nation. It is one of the most popular spots in Guwahati and one that inspires patriotism in the hearts of all the visitors.
