The city of Mysore is known best for its opulent Dasara celebrations, a time when the entire city comes to life. Dasara is in fact the most famous Mysore festival and lasts for ten days during the months of September and October. However, there are other notable events in Mysore too. Some of these are related to traditions such as Ugadi, which is the Kannada New Year, and some are religious in nature.
Mysore also celebrates other festivals like Independence Day, Republic Day, Eid, Christmas and Ganesh Chaturthi. While all these Mysore festivals get a fair amount of mileage, the city of Mysore is unequivocally connected with Dasara celebrations. This is a tradition from the days of yore.
The Maharaja of Mysore would hold a Durbar for 9 days and on the 10th day, he would go on a procession on an elephant, through the city. This splendid sight takes place even today as the procession is led by bedecked elephants and horses. Here are some of the events in Mysore that are celebrated widely through the city.
The new year for Kannadigas is called Ugadi and is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm in Mysore. It’s considered to be an auspicious day for new beginnings. As part of the celebrations, homes are cleaned and colourful rangolis adorn house entrances.
Also known as the ‘diamond crown’ festival, for the bejewelled crown that is on the idol of Lord Cheluvarayaswamy, this is a splendid festival where temples are decorated with candles and lamps and devotees from all over come here.
Close on the heels of Dasara is the Mysuru Winter Festival, a 10-day long event featuring a flower show at the Mysore Palace. There are performances by various artists and children too get to enjoy the festivities in a separate Children’s Festival.
This is a flea market combined with food festival and a great place for some fun and entertainment. There are live performances and a children’s play area along with all sorts of shopping options.
Beginning in September and ending in November, this festival is a long shopping extravaganza featuring more than 1000 brands. Excellent if you want to get some shopping done while travelling.
